
Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on Earth. Uganda is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the most important conservation destinations globally. Rwanda is as well a home to mountain Gorillas. Trekking these endangered primates through mountainous dense rainforest and spending time observing their natural behavior is not only a safari activity it is a deeply emotional and life-changing experience.
Gorilla trekking takes place in; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park while in Rwanda gorilla Trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park. These parks are located in the southwestern region of the country and form part of the Virunga conservation landscape.
About the Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the eastern gorilla and are critically endangered. They live in stable family groups led by a dominant silverback male.Gorillas share over 98% of their DNA with humans. Their expressions, gestures, and social bonds are incredibly relatable and powerful to witness in the wild.
The Gorilla Trekking Experience
Your day begins early, at the park headquarters. You will receive a detailed briefing from Wildlife rangers. Visitors are divided into small groups of maximum eight people per gorilla family to ensure minimal disturbance. The briefing will include;
• Gorilla behavior
• Safety guidelines
• Trekking expectations
• Assigned gorilla family group
The Trek Into the Forest
While in the forest the trek can take anywhere between 1 to 9 hours depending on:
• The movement of the gorillas
• Weather conditions
• Terrain difficulty
The rainforest terrain may include:
• Steep slopes
• Muddy trails
• Dense vegetation
• High altitude walking
Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour in their presence.This hour is often described as emotional, humbling, magical and unforgettable.
Physical Requirements
Gorilla trekking requires moderate fitness. It is not technical climbing, but it involves hiking through mountainous forest terrain.

- Long trousers and long sleeves
- Gardening gloves (for gripping vegetation)
- Waterproof jacket
- Drinking water
- Nature blending colors
- Face masks
- Gators or Long Stalks
Porters are available for hire and highly recommended. Hiring a porter not only supports local communities but also makes the trek easier and more enjoyable.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
A valid gorilla permit is required and must be secured in advance. The permit includes:
• Park entry
• One hour with the gorillas
Due to limited availability, permits should be booked months in advance, especially during peak season.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is available year-round. However, the dry seasons are generally preferred:
• June to September
• December to February
Rainy seasons can make trekking more challenging but also offer lush green landscapes and fewer visitors.
